A toilet cover walked into my life...

In my early twenties (so, a million years ago), I worked in a paint store. Actually, my aunt bought a shop and gave me a job.

Pure nepotism at its finest.

But it turns out, I was pretty good at it. I learned customer service pretty quickly and I discovered a knack and love for interior design.

My job was mainly to help people colour-match all kinds of household items to a coordinating paint colour.

I saw everything from door jambs, favourite toys, and a lot of curtain fabric. And one time, someone even brought in their toilet cover!

Looking back now, I don't know how I held it together as I matched the 'potty hat' to one of Benjamin Moore's finest. But I remember the woman left happy, can of paint and toilet cover back in hand.

On brighter days, one of the perks of my job was a great discount on paint. But there was just one problem: I couldn’t do for myself what I did for other people.

When it came to choosing my own colours for my own house (well, my tiny bedroom at my mom’s house) I was too close to my own projects, I guess.

Maybe you’ve felt like that with the creative side of your business. When you’re too close, you just can’t see the mistakes.

Even if you’re great at helping others with their work, their business, addressing their needs, something happens to us when we have to help ourselves.

So I’m never surprised when smart, creative business owners come to me with their copy projects and say, “Look, I wrote this, but I wondered if you’d look it over and see if it can be better.”

Not a prob.

If you’re feeling like there’s a project you’re just too close to, I'm happy to take a look. In fact, you can send it right over by clicking this form.

P.S. Hot design tip: ditch the potty hat.
